Our History

The Mt. Pisgah Union American Methodist Episcopal Church had it's begining around the year 1858 prior to the founding of the city of Vineland.

Our first church was organized at a place close to present day Buena. The area was known as Richard Wood's Place. It was later sold to Charles K. Landis and became known as Vineland.

The early organizers Lewis Collins, his father Zachariah Murry had come to this area to help clear the land. Mr. Collins a life long member of the U.A.M.E. conference, gathered a group of men together to form the church. They met in a small log cabin in the woods.

As Church attendance expanded, the log cabin proved inadequate for meetings. The group then moved to a place called the "Red House". They remained there for a number of years until the land at 325 Plum Street was purchased and the new Church was erected.

The deed to the structure was recorded October 15, 1880 in the Office of Cumberland County in Bridgeton in Book No.161 of Deeds by Danieil Sharp, Clerk. The deed records Robert C. Sykes, Carrie S. Sykes and Thomas B. Steele as sellers of the land.

Trustees signing the mortgage were James Crawford, David Royal and George Miller.

Lewis Collins remained at the church for forty years as Class leader. He also served as a Steward for thirty years and as a Trustee. He died June 23, 1918.

The Church was served by many local Preachers. One of the more noted was Rev. Dr. Andrew A. Watson who served for twenty two years. During his Capable Pastorate the church steadily grew in membership and attendance until he and the official board saw that a new church was needed.

Plans were drawn for the new church in 1971 and ground was purchased at 315 Plum street. A ground breaking date of April 16,1972 was set. In September of 1972 the church construction company began to build the edifice. On April 1,1973 we were able to march into the new Mt Pisgah Church.

When God called Rev. Dr. Watson home. Rev Lula Harris became our interim Pastor. She was followed by Pastor William H. Oliver,Pastor Clarence Edmonson and Pastor Curtis Johnson.

The Lord has blessed Mt.Pisgah Church in 2005 with our Current Pastor Reverend Darnell K. Wise.

We Praise Almighty God for all his Magnificient gifts to us . To God Be The Glory.

We invite you to become a part of the church today and a piece of its history tomorrow.
